Everyone wants to lose weight quickly but that doesn’t work out well in the long run. Some crash diets can even cause medical problems. Most people gain back every pound they lose on a crash diet and then some.

One common crash diet is a very low calorie diet, usually consuming 800 calories or less per day. Most people suffer mild side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation and fatigue. These symptoms usually go away within a few weeks of ending the diet. However, some people develop more serious complications from such a diet.

The most common serious condition that develops as a result of very low calorie diets is gallstones. It appears that rapid weight loss causes the gall bladder to decrease the ability to contract bile.

Many people try single food diets such as the grapefruit diet or the cabbage soup diet. Such diets are a quick calorie purge that has no nutritional value. Most of the weight loss with these diets is due to water loss and most borders on being dangerous to your health. Any diet that recommends that you only follow it for a week and not to try again for several weeks cannot be good for your body.

Another common crash diet is the liquid diet in which all meals are liquid and claim you can drink your way to a slimmer body. While these diets control your caloric intake to help you lose weight, they also slow your metabolism.

You will gain your weight back immediately upon going off this diet unless you greatly change your normal eating habits. Another problem with liquid diets is that they tend to be lacking in fiber which may cause digestive issues. It is also difficult to get enough protein with such a diet and may cause the loss of lean body mass.

One of the more popular and best diet for weight loss today are the master cleanse diets. These diets claim to detoxify the body and remove excess fat. Master cleanse diets are a variation of the liquid diet in which solid foods are replaced with a tea or lemonade made with cayenne pepper and maple syrup. Some of the immediate side effects of this diet are nausea, fatigue, dehydration and dizziness. Over a long period of time this diet can cause the loss of muscle mass.

Diet pills are one of the oldest methods of fast weight loss. They work by changing normal bodily processes such as metabolism, absorption and appetite.

Most of these diet pills have been proven to be unsafe and are not recommended unless the physician believes strongly that the benefits greatly outweigh any risks. Some of these drugs can also cause life threatening side effects such as heart problems.

While these diets sound like an easy way to quickly lose weight, they have been proven to be ineffective at long term weight loss and can cause other health problems. The only proven method to lose weight and to keep it off is to learn to eat properly and to exercise.
