To increase the nose shape the nasal surgery used is called Augmentation rhinoplasty. The patient undergo augmentation rhinoplasty are non-Caucasian and this type of surgery is performed on patients of all ethnicities.

Reconstructive rhinoplasty or cosmetic surgery is the process to make nose smaller or slimmer, or removing a bump. Rhinoplasty is also used to build up the bridge of nose or the septum, columella or to repair the base of nose.

The structure of the nose may be broken down due to disease, trauma, birth defects, repeated surgeries and even to take drug for a long time. Some of these deformities can disfigure the shape of the nose. For these cases the nose is augmented with implants and synthetic or natural materials is used for it.

The defects in the bridge of the nose, the base of the nose, and the columella, Nasal implants is used correct these defects. Nasal implants in rhinoplasty surgery may be used in bone grafts from your hip, leg, or rib and cartilage grafts from your septum, ear, or ribs. For Synthetic implants the material such as solid silicone, polyethylene, expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), a bone-like material called hydroxyapatite, and other materials are used.

The most common part for nasal implants is the bridge of the nose and the columella. Nasal implants are also used to correct the other sites around and under the nose to repair birth defects and damage due to trauma.

Nasal Augmentation with Bone and Cartilage Grafts

A rhinoplasty surgeon can construct your nose by using pieces of bone and cartilage. It may be taken from your ribs, hip, or leg and will give the right shape. You will have a cut, pain and also you to face some complications like infection at whatever site from which the surgeon harvested the bone.

A bone can also graft from a cadaver, called an allograft and these grafts are sterilized and not cause any problems so they are used in different types of orthopedic and spine surgeries and in periodontal surgery.

Cartilage used in nasal augmentation can be taken from the septum of your nose, from ear or from a rib. To take a cartilage from the ear the cut is making on the back of era and small slice is taken from there. If your nose needs lot of remodeling then the cartilage may be taken from both of your eras.

With both bone and cartilage grafts, there is the chance that your body will reabsorb the graft, at least to some extent, or that the graft may deteriorate.

A kind of plastic is used for a nasal augmentation implant and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE), which is sold under the brand name of Gore-Tex. For many years polyethylene and ePTFE have been used in medicine and with these materials you can get in a variety of sizes and shapes and one get it as their individual's need.

For a larger bridge or a more pronounced tip region of nose grafts or implants is needed for these changes. For graft a material is taken from your own body and transferred to another place. The often used grafts are cartilage grafts from inside your nose. Septal cartilage grafts are usually the first-line option used nasal surgery.

If the amount of material needed is greater than the amount of grafting material available then the implants may be an option. For implant synthetic materials are used, there are many implants available for augmentation rhinoplasty. Common implants used include: polytetrafluoroethylene (Gore-Tex), Silicone, and porous polyethylene (MedPor) and these implants can be safely used in nasal surgery.
